How we work alongside people
How we work matters as much as what we do.
Across Southdown, we work alongside people in ways that are person-centred, strengths-based and shaped by what matters to each person. We listen, build trust and recognise that everyone’s experiences, choices and hopes are different.
Our work is guided by our values, by psychologically informed practice, and by a belief in each person’s strengths, choices and potential.

Our values in practice
Our values guide how we work with clients, tenants, families, colleagues, partners and communities.
They shape our decisions, our relationships and the way we respond to changing needs:

Force for good
We want to make a positive difference in people’s lives. We focus on people’s strengths and potential, not just the challenges they may be facing.

Brilliant with people
We aim to be compassionate, inclusive and welcoming. We want people to feel respected, listened to and able to be themselves.

United
We work best when we work together. We build strong relationships with clients, tenants, colleagues, local authorities, the NHS, voluntary sector partners and communities, so support feels more connected.

Trustworthy
We act with integrity and transparency. We want people to feel safe with us, know what to expect and trust that we will do what we say.

Responsive
We listen, learn and adapt. People’s needs and circumstances change, so our support needs to be flexible, thoughtful and shaped by real experience.
The Southdown Beacon
The Southdown Beacon is our shared framework for psychologically informed support.
It helps us work with compassion, clarity and consistency, so support feels thoughtful, respectful and person-centred across Southdown. The Beacon guides how we create safe and welcoming environments, build trusting relationships, and recognise each person’s experiences, strengths and potential.
It gives our staff a shared language for support, while still allowing us to respond to the person in front of us. It helps us listen with curiosity, offer choice, work alongside people and keep hope at the centre of support, so people feel safe, seen and supported.
Staff explained everything clearly and made me feel part of the decision-making.

How we keep learning and improving
We want our support to keep improving.
We use feedback, service data, quality checks and reflective practice to understand what is working well, where we need to do better, and how we can keep listening, learning and acting.. This helps us learn from people’s experiences and make thoughtful changes across our services.
Our Quality and Performance teams work alongside services to look at evidence, understand patterns and support improvement. Training, supervision and practice frameworks also help our staff work in ways that are safe, respectful and person-centred.
In our learning disability services, specialist training supports staff to work in ways that protect people’s rights, reduce restrictions and promote independence, dignity and choice.

This was a positive experience where I felt valued and heard. My opinions were respected and taken into account, and I felt like I belonged. Open discussion was encouraged.

Working together with clients and tenants
People should have a say in the support they receive and in how Southdown develops.
We involve clients and tenants in shaping their own support, improving services, taking part in recruitment, reviewing information and sharing ideas about what could work better.
This work is central to how we learn and improve. It helps us understand what matters most to the people we support and makes our services more responsive, accessible and respectful.
An inclusive place to work
How we support colleagues matters too.
We want Southdown to be a place where people feel included, heard and able to do their best work. Staff bring skill, compassion, lived experience and local knowledge to their roles, and their insight helps shape how we work.
We listen to colleagues through staff voice, employee networks, shared learning and regular opportunities to give feedback. This helps us strengthen our culture and make Southdown a more supportive and inclusive place to work.

How this looks in real life
Our values and the Beacon are not just ideas.
They shape everyday moments: how we listen, how we respond, how we build trust and how we support people to make choices.

Martyn's story
Martyn is supported by Southdown and plays an active part in shaping the support around him.
He chooses where he wants to go, plans trips, helps new staff understand how to work with him and gives feedback in team meetings.
His story shows what support can look like when choice, individuality and working together are part of everyday life.
Mandy’s story
Mandy is a Southdown support worker. For her, good support is about helping people live independent, meaningful lives and recognising that everyone has the right to live as they choose.
She describes learning from the people she supports, working closely with colleagues and taking time to reflect on how support can keep improving. Her story shows how staff bring Southdown’s values to life through kindness, patience, listening and respect.
