Southdown’s Chit Chat Corner initiative, launched in 2025, is already helping clients from our learning disability services across Sussex form meaningful friendships and stay connected.

The sessions provide a supportive space where people can meet, chat over refreshments, and exchange contact details. The initiative addresses a significant gap in quality of life for many people with learning disabilities, who face higher risks of loneliness and social isolation often compounded by communication barriers.

While Southdown runs larger social events like the annual carol concert and summer fiesta, many clients benefit from additional support to initiate conversations and build lasting connections beyond one-off gatherings.

Isabelle, one of our clients, says: “Friends are important to me because I like to talk to them; having friends makes me feel happy”

Why connection matters

Connection and purpose are central to Southdown’s approach to support. People with learning disabilities face significantly higher risks of loneliness and social isolation, often compounded by communication barriers and limited opportunities to meet others.

Research by Mencap in 2022 found that 88% of families and carers said their loved one with a learning disability often felt sad, whilst 82% experienced loneliness due to rarely being able to leave their homes. Nearly a third were struggling with mental health issues including low mood and low self-esteem.

Southdown’s team members identified an opportunity to help clients connect with others who understand their experiences. The initiative goes beyond one-off events to help people maintain friendships over time, with early sessions seeing clients smiling, chatting and swapping details. A particularly moving moment came when clients asked to become pen pals, signing up to write to each other between sessions.

Making new friends

The connections are already leading to lasting friendships. Stuart, one of our clients, has since met up with his new friend Stefan twice.

“I’ve met up with Stefan twice after we met at the Fiesta; we went to KFC and Wetherspoons. It was very good. Stefan is very polite, courteous, friendly, kind and easy to talk to. He always talks about good things in life. I’d like to meet up with Stefan again!”

Another client, Stephen, said:

“I got a lot out of the Chit Chat Corner at the summer fiesta, as I have a new friend called Jo who comes to visit me with his carer and I am hoping to visit him soon. I have already saved the date for the next one in my calendar!”

With sessions planned throughout the year, this initiative reflects Southdown’s commitment to not just providing safe housing and quality support, but actively helping people thrive through meaningful connection in their communities.
