Taking on a new leadership role is always an exciting challenge, and my first 100 days as CFO at Southdown have been no exception. As I look back on this initial period, I’d like to share some key insights, experiences, and reflections from my journey so far.
From day one, my primary focus was on building strong working relationships with my C-Suite colleagues and my direct team. I dedicated time to understanding their perspectives, learning how they work, and aligning myself with Southdown’s environment. This period was not just about introductions but about actively listening, engaging, and shaping my approach to contribute effectively.
I spent valuable time with Southdown’s Board, including participating in a business strategy-setting awayday, and have visited our services across different areas of the organisation. These opportunities enabled me to deepen my understanding of Southdown’s position in the sector, the work we do, and the people we support.
Southdown has proven to be exactly what I anticipated: a values-driven organisation with a strong culture and a dedicated team committed to making a meaningful impact for individuals and society. It is a complex and evolving organisation, and I am excited to be part of its ongoing transformation.
On a personal level, I have gained confidence from the warm welcome I have received. My priorities – such as teamwork, integrity, and strategic leadership – are well aligned with Southdown’s needs. This alignment reassures me that I can contribute effectively to the organisation’s success.
While not entirely surprising, I have been struck by the intricate nature of Southdown’s services and the broader landscape in which it operates. The complexity presents both challenges and opportunities, and I’ve come to appreciate the adaptability required to navigate this dynamic environment. One major takeaway is that staying prepared for unexpected developments is a crucial skill in this role.
The most rewarding part of my first 100 days has been getting to know my team, understanding their experiences, and providing leadership and support. Witnessing their dedication and expertise has been inspiring, and I am eager to help them grow and succeed.
Trust is the foundation of strong professional relationships. My approach has been to listen, learn, and share openly, ensuring that my colleagues and team members feel heard and valued. Demonstrating my experience and knowledge while following through on commitments has been key in establishing credibility and trust. These principles have guided my interactions with the C-Suite, my team, and external stakeholders alike.
My role as CFO extends beyond managing finances – it’s about providing strategic leadership to support Southdown’s long-term sustainability. Working alongside my C-Suite colleagues, my focus is on maintaining financial security while seeking opportunities for growth and development. Ensuring that we strike the right balance between continuity, innovation, and opportunity will be essential in securing Southdown’s future success. Most importantly, every financial decision must align with our purpose and values, ultimately benefiting the communities we serve.
As I move beyond my first 100 days, I am most excited about continuing to support my team’s development, collaborating on Southdown’s new strategic direction, and guiding the organisation through the opportunities and challenges ahead. Leadership is most rewarding when it drives positive change, and I look forward to playing my part in shaping Southdown’s future success.
Here’s to the next 100 days!
